NURS 101: Intro to SDOH (W #1)

Collective set of conditions in which people are born, grow up, live and work

housing, education, financial, security, built environment, and health system

Income/social status, employment/working conditions, education and literacy, childhood experiences, physical environments, social supports and coping skills, healthy behaviours, access to health services, biology/genetic endowment, gender, culture, race/racism, political determinants, and indigenous health

A woman working as a roofer falls off the roof, can't return to work as she is paralyzed, health care is not covered, has to pay for her treatments, has a loss of income, maybe no benefits, can't afford to take care of her kids, has to give them up to foster homes, can't afford house, goes into community housing

It is the main approach of tackling health equity and inequality, responsible for health outcomes, unfair and avoidable differences in health status, correctable (upstream approach), and most are modifiable factors can be changed

"good health is state of complete physical, social, and mental well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity

"extent to which individual or group is able to realize aspirations and satisfy needs ; to change and cope with the environment ; seen as resourceful not objective of living; emphasizes social and personal resources"

M-B-S (Medical, Behavioural, Socioenvironemntal --> "most basic stuff")

Lacked inclusion of income, gender, ethnicity/race, social position, education, etc

1) Health promotion : increasing well-being and self-actualization (ex. education on adequate diet or exercise)

2) Disease Prevention : action to avoid or forestall illness/disease (ex. keeping up with vaccines, regular checkups, screening)

Lowest/highest income group (gap is increasing), education (more Canadians going to uni), housing need and food insecurity on the rise in low income homes, most don't meet recommended level of physical activity, and smoking rate is decreasing
