SOCIAL WORK WITH GROUPS
This week we discuss treatment groups with a special emphasis on treatment groups for substance use disorders. Social Workers, especially those who are dedicated to clinical social work, are often guided by treatment theories or frameworks. Chapter 12 of your textbook (and also this week's recorded lecture) references the treatment group manual found in Appendix one of your textbooks. After reading about all 4 treatment modules, answer the following 2 questions:
1. Which of the 4 modules would you choose to serve as the framework for a treatment group that you would facilitate? Be sure to give an overview of this theory and a detailed explanation for why you would choose this theory.
2. For each of the 4 modules, the authors present examples of exercises that could be used with a treatment group. Which exercise related to the theory you chose in part 1 resonates with you? Give a description of what clients would learn through this exercise. Also explain how this exercise is related to the theory.
For question three, use this week’s other assigned reading to help craft your response.
3. This week’s other assigned reading discusses 5 major types of groups for treating substance use disorders (psychoeducational groups, skills development groups, cognitive behavioral groups, support groups, and interpersonal process groups.). Additionally, the article discusses three specialized groups (relapse prevention, communal/culturally specific groups, and expressive groups). Which one of these groups would you be most interested in facilitating? Give an overview of the type of group that you chose and explain why you would be most interested in facilitating this type of group.

Chapter 12 Treatment Groups
1 Chapter 12 Objectives Start, lead, and end treatment groups. LO 12-2Comprehend the therapeutic technique of motivational interviewing. LO 12-3Set professional boundaries with clients. LO 12-4Understand the therapeutic factors of treatment groups. LO 12-5Comprehend the merits and shortcomings of evidence-based practice. Treatment Theories Rational Therapy in Groups The primary cause of all our emotions and actions is what we tell ourselves about the events that happen to us Event Self Talk Emotions Actions Behavior Therapy Assumption is that all behavior occurs in response to stimulation. The maladaptive behavior is the problem that needs to be changed Features: Operant Conditioning (reinforcement; stimulus) Respondent Conditioning (behaviors are learned by being paired with other behaviors; e.g. Pavlovian Dog experiment) Modeling Reality Therapy Choice Theory: We carry around pictures in our heads, both of what reality is like and of how we would like it to be. All of our behavior is a constant attempt to reduce the difference between what we want and what we have . Whenever the picture we see and the one we want to see differ, a signal generated by this difference leads us to behave in a way that will obtain the picture we want. Humans are driven by these needs: Survival Love and belonging Power Freedom Fun See axioms in Appendix one of textbook Dialectical Behavior Therapy in Groups Third generation of cognitive behavioral therapy Focused on changing the ways that we think about and deal with emotions rather than changing our thought content. Think of two opposing ideas coming together to make a new idea Creates a new balanced philosophy towards life Influenced by Eastern mindfulness, Hegelian dialectic philosophy and motivational enhancement
