Research Methods in Nursing
There are four main types of Quantitative research used in nursing research: Descriptive, Correlational, Causal-Comparative/Quasi-Experimental, and Experimental Research. Descriptive research tries to describe the current status of an identified variable. It describes a population, situation, or phenomenon. The person conducting the research doesn’t start with a hypothesis rather they will complete one when data is first collected. The analysis of the data will prove an accurate hypothesis. In nursing we can use descriptive research to examine trends and patterns the healthcare that helps planning and monitoring the effectiveness of patient’s medical treatments. Correlational Research attempts to examine/ analyze the relationship between two or more variables using statistical data. In this research variables are not manipulated, they are only identified and studied as they occur in the natural setting. This research can be applied in the nursing field when we analyze a patient’s illness when we compare between two variables that are making the illness worse. The third research method used in nursing practice is called Causal-Comparative/quasi experimental Research which helps find relationship between variables. In this research an independent variable is identified but not manipulated by the person conducting the research and the effects of the independent variable on the dependent variable are measured. Lastly, Experimental Research is another type of research used in nursing practice. In this type of research uses the scientific method to establish cause and effect relationship among a group of variables that make up a study. This research provides more definitive conclusions about the casual relationships among the variables. Experimental research defines variables, formulate a hypothesis, design an experiment, assign subjects, and measure the dependent variable. Overall, evidenced based practice is very useful in driving clinical decisions and care. Research methods are very important in nursing practice because they influence and shape the nursing profession and informs about policy, professional decision-making and nursing actions. Research methods provide evidence to support nursing practice and helps provide quality patient care by guiding nursing actions. Research methods are also used in order to expand a person’s knowledge based on a specific topic and then being able to put it in every day practice.

There is a wide variety of qualitative research topics in nursing, and this type of research seeks to learn more about those phenomena about which we know very little.
