Course Description

Data gathered during the project is analyzed and evaluated to determine the outcomes garnered by the
project. A proposal for dissemination and mass implementation is created. Learners identify areas of future
research and practice change for the continued improvement of health care. Learners are required to plan
and document their learning goals and activities using the DPI Project Milestone Guide. Learners also continue
work as necessary in the DNP Practice Immersion Workspace to ensure that all programmatic requirements
have been met. Practice hours: Learners must be able to document a minimum of 100 concurrently or
previously logged practice hours in association with the three DPI Project courses. Practicum/field experience

Practice Immersion Hours Information: Purpose of Practice Immersion Experience

Practice immersion is an essential component of the GCU Doctor of Nursing Practice educational program,
combining scholarly activities with practice environment experiences designed to provide in-depth,
application-based learning. Practice immersion experiences are designed to help learners build and assimilate

knowledge for advanced specialty practice at a high level of complexity.

A maximum of 50 practice immersion hours focusing on current course content and learning objectives is built
into each course in the DNP program. The final work product at the end of the program, the DPI Project, can
account for an additional 100 practice immersion hours. For information on acquiring additional immersion
hours, locate the “Practice Immersion Hours Appropriate to Courses” document in the Individual Success Plan
folder of the program documents, located in DNP PI Workspace. These hours are logged into the Typhon
Student Tracking System as each course progresses.

Review the sections of the Guidelines for Graduate Field Experiences, located in the Student Success Center,
that discuss practice immersion hours.

The DNP Practice Immersion (PI) Workspace is a dynamic online learning community designated specifically

Requirements for Successful Course Completion

A letter grade is only awarded upon successful completion of all required deliverables, including those
submissions designed to facilitate, evaluate, and document the project-related practice experiences and
hours. Learners who fail to complete and submit all deliverables may receive a failing grade.

All DNP learners are required to have and are responsible for maintaining a mentor from the beginning of the
program until graduation. The mentor is expected to work with the learner on the Direct Practice
Improvement (DPI) Project. The collaboration is necessary for the learner to build the Individual Success Plan
(ISP), work on assignments that build the foundation for the DPI Project, and maintain frequent
communications with faculty. Because this requirement must be adhered to, if a learner loses the mentor, the
learner must immediately contact the Office of Field Experience to resolve the issue before the course ends. If
there is no mentor, there is no mentor evaluation, and therefore immersion hours will be forfeited and no
longer be valid for submission.

Disseminating the Direct Practice Improvement Project Findings

Unlike other types of research, the guiding premise of the Direct Practice Improvement (DPI) Project is to
assemble current, relevant, evidence-based information to develop a real-world application to improve or

enhance an area of clinical practice. Dissemination of new applications to the field is critical for closing the
loop and helping improve the body of knowledge and is equally as important as the communication of
findings to the individuals who participated in the DPI Project as subjects.

There are two major methods for learners to communicate findings: writing for publication and presenting at
conferences. Some learners know from the start of the program exactly how and where they want to
disseminate their application-based DPI Project findings. Other learners may not yet have focused on this
aspect of the DPI Project and may be unsure of where to start.

For your oral DPI Project defense assignment later in this course, you are required to use a poster template to
disseminate your DPI Project’s findings as if they were being presented at a conference and attach it to your
DPI Completed Project – Defense PowerPoint and Call submission. Review the “DNP Poster Template” and the

The DNP Direct Practice Improvement (DPI) Project requires extensive scholarly-based work produced in the
relatively short course timeframe of DNP-965. Learners are required to exhibit a high level of intention to
complete the milestone assignments on time throughout the course in order to be prepared to submit the
Benchmark – DPI Project Manuscript assignment in Topic 8. The committee will need to approve the
submission to the Topic 8 DPI Final Project Manuscript using the Approval Signature Form, located in the DC
Network DNP-965 folder.

Before the Topic 8 submission to the college, the manuscript will undergo another Academic Quality Review
(AQR). The manuscript will be a required submission (Chapters 1-5) in Topic 5 dropboxes by the last day of
Topic 5 at midnight Arizona time. There are two dropboxes. If ready for Academic Quality Review (AQR), the
manuscript will be submitted to both. The manuscript is submitted to this assignment in the form of a single
Word document to each dropbox. There will be no extensions granted for AQR submission.

The submitted proposal will be sent to AQR and reviewed using the AQR checklist located in the AQR folder in
the DC Network. The AQR is performed by a qualified external reviewer that provides a formal scientific merit
review and quality assurance check on the DPI Project Proposal. The AQR review will be returned to your chair.
This review will take approximately 5-7 business days.

If the manuscript proposal is not submitted to the AQR dropbox before the due date, your manuscript will not
undergo AQR review. You will then be required to take an extension course or repeat DNP-965, depending on

prepared, the learner completes a formal defense with the committee and submits the final manuscript as
the benchmark of this course.
Once the final manuscript is submitted to the Final DPI Department Review in Topic 8, the learner will have 6.
the opportunity for limited iteration with the Department until the manuscript is sent for Dean Review. If the
manuscript is deemed not ready to be sent to the dean by the Department, the learner will be required to
take an extension course to continue to work with the chairperson and committee. The learner will need to
have a dean-approved manuscript, complete all courses with a passing grade, and 1,000 practice immersion
hours to be eligible for graduation.

Progression:

Learners who can complete all listed course milestones will pass the course and, if all other programmatic
requirements have been met, complete the program and graduate.

Nonprogression:

Learners who are not able to complete all listed milestones will not pass the course and will be required to
retake DNP-965.

Directions: DPI Project Manuscript Submission – Department Review

You will submit your final committee-approved manuscript for departmental review. You must submit to the
dropbox and to the department. If the manuscript is not ready for Dean Review, you will have the opportunity
for iteration with the department. If your manuscript is not deemed ready to be sent to the dean by the
department after the iteration, you will be advised to take an extension course to continue to work with your
chairperson.

Submission of the completed DPI Project Manuscript Submission – Department Review is the required
deliverable to progress through the DPI Project implementation and completion phases. Some helpful tips for
ensuring successful completion of the DPI Project include:

Confirm that your project meets the GCU DPI requirement that it translates existing knowledge or guidelines 1.
into clinical practice to improve patient outcomes.
Confirm that your clinical questions align with your method, design, data collection/tools, and data analysis.2.
Accurate grammar, APA style, and scholarly writing are required. Please note that being an editor is not the 3.
role of your chair or AQR reviewers. Manuscripts that do not follow APA guidelines/scholarly writing will
immediately be sent back to the learner.
Remember that your manuscript will undergo several reviews from your chairperson, content expert, AQRs, 4.
department chair, and dean that will require multiple iterations. Please be open to feedback and
incorporate the feedback into your manuscript to improve the quality and rigor of your DPI Project.

In addition to submitting your manuscript to the dropbox, you are also required to submit a copy to the
following email address: DPIproject@gcu.edu and a copy to your chair on the submission. Submission to both
portals is required to successfully complete this assignment. You are not eligible to submit to the

Assessment Description

General Requirements:

due in this course.

Use the Individual Success Plan (ISP) developed in Topic 1 as a personal plan for completing your practice
hours and how competencies will be met. All of the major milestones and deliverables should be indicated
in the timeline.
Conferences may be conducted face-to-face or via technology. A copy of the signed document will be
uploaded into the classroom no later than the end of Topic 8.
Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. The APA Style Guide is
located in the Student Success Center.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to the beginning to become familiar with the
expectations for successful completion.
You are not required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite.

Directions:

A postconference is mandatory and will occur at the end of each course through graduation using the ISP form
located in the DC Network. This is intended for the student and preceptor/mentor to review and evaluate the
completion of the ISP. The faculty will validate that all areas are at “Meets Expectations” on the mentor
evaluation form, located in Typhon or Lopes Activity Tracker, prior to progression. The learner will upload the
ISP and preceptor/mentor evaluations and proof of entered and approved immersion hours by Topic 8 with
the other required deliverables. Faculty will review this before filling out the faculty evaluation of the learner in
the appropriate tracking system, which the learner will also upload in Topic 8. The course faculty will complete
a separate evaluation of the learner’s performance in the classroom. The faculty is responsible for any course
grading, final course grade, and validation of the students’ completed practicum/clinical hours.

As instructed in Topic 1, the Individual Success Plan (ISP) assignment in this course required your collaboration
with the course faculty early on to establish a plan for successful completion of mutually identified and
agreed-upon specific deliverables for your programmatic requirements. These programmatic requirements
were as follows: (1) completion of required practice immersion hours, (2) completion of work associated with
program competencies, and (3) work associated with completion of your Direct Practice Improvement (DPI)
Project. Learners must have met with their preceptor/mentor by the end of Topic 8 in order to have the ISP
signed off.

Practice Immersion Hours Portfolio

Assessment Description

The Typhon Tracking System will be used to document and follow the status of your practice immersion hours
throughout this and every subsequent course. Learners must be able to document a maximum of 50
concurrently or previously logged practice hours in association with this course, which will contribute to
fulfillment of the total required 1,000 post-baccalaureate practice hours by the conclusion of the program.
Please review the Practice Hours Portfolio Required Elements itemized below, then review the Guidelines for
Graduate Field Experiences document in the in the DC Network for details on what may or may not qualify as
practice hours.

Practice Hours Portfolio Required Elements

The Practice Hours Portfolio (using the Typhon Student Tracking System) will include all of the following
elements:

Assessment Description

The preceptor/mentor will perform a final clinical evaluation via the Typhon system. The preceptor/mentor will
receive an email link at the beginning of Topic 6 to access the evaluation through Typhon.

Learners will access the completed preceptor/mentor evaluations in Typhon under the tab for “EASI:

Evaluation and Survey Instrument” and print out the completed evaluation, sign it, and upload the signed
evaluation into the assignment dropbox. In order to receive a passing grade in the course, all course
evaluations must be completed by preceptors/mentors and submitted by learners.

The course faculty will review the evaluation in the assignment dropbox and confirm in Typhon.

It is the learner’s responsibility to ensure that the preceptor/mentor has completed evaluation. If the
preceptor/mentor does not receive the evaluation via the email address on file with GCU, the learner should
contact the course faculty immediately.
