ACCT 301 Writing AssignmentFASB Codification /Accounting Society
You may choose one assignment to complete from the following two options.
Option 1: FASB Codification
The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) organizes U.S. generally accepted accounting
principles (US GAAP) into a system known as the Accounting Standards Codification. Study the
Codification and write a paper that discusses three or more of the following issues:
1. Receivables (310 Receivables -> 10 Overall)
2. Inventory (330 Inventory -> 10 Overall)
3. Debt with conversion features (470 Debt -> 20 Debt with conversion and other options)
4. Property, Plant, and Equipment (360 Property, Plant, and Equipment -> 10 Overall)
5. Capitalization of Interest (835 Interest -> 20 Capitalization of Interest)
6. Loss and gain contingencies (450 Contingencies -> 20 & 30)
7. An issue of your choice which is different from above

Requirements:
• You are to complete this assignment on an individual basis and submit this assignment
via the Turnitin link on Canvas.
• Your paper must be in Microsoft Word and must have a minimum of 1,200 words
(excluding references).
• Each of the three topics you discuss must be organized in different sections, with section
numbers and section headings in bold.
• You must reference individual subtopics of the Codification in the paper. An example of
such a reference is 330-10-35-3.
• Please do not directly quote phrases from the FASB Codification in order to avoid a high
Turnitin similarity score. Instead, you should describe the Codification using your own
words with sufficiently different sentence structures and choice of words.
Option 2: Accounting Society Enrollment
Enroll as a fully paid member of the Accounting Society (AS) and attend at least seven AS
meetings during the semester. Make sure your attendance is recorded by the AS officers by
signing in prior to each meeting. If you attend a meeting without signing in, it is NOT counted
toward this assignment. The instructor will receive a copy of all signed in members for all
meetings in order to verify your attendance.
Each student must provide a summary of meetings attended that discusses all the meetings
up to the seven required. Be sure that you include discussions to all meetings in ONE paper, with
each paragraph addressing one single meeting (for any meeting after the seventh meeting, you
could, but do not have to include a summary). It is advised that you keep a note of the content
of each meeting at each attendance.
Attending the election meetings, free introductory meetings, or meet & greet meetings does
NOT count towards the seven-meeting requirement. If you attend less than seven meetings, your
score will be proportionately lower. For example, if you attend five meetings, you may receive up
to 71% (=5/7) for this assignment. Attendance at the Career Connections counts as two regular
on-campus meetings.
Requirements:
• Your paper must be in Microsoft Word and must have a minimum of 800 words.
• You must discuss each meeting attended in one paragraph, including the dates of the
meeting, the presenting party at the meeting, and important professional information
you gathered from each meeting.
Additional requirements:
a) Submit the assignment through Canvas by the due date. A late submission will have a 50%
penalty.
b) The assignment must be submitted through the Canvas Turnitin link. Simply emailing the
instructor the assignment does NOT count as a submission.
c) Your submitted assignments should have a Turnitin similarity score of 20% or below. If
your similarity score is higher than 20% but below 35.01%, you will only receive 70% of
the potential credit; if your similarity score is higher than 35% but below 50.01%, you will
only receive 40% of the potential credit; if your similarity score is higher than 50%, you
will receive no credit for this assignment. Students may find links posted on Canvas
regarding plagiarism useful in avoiding a high Turnitin similarity score.
d) Please use Times New Roman or Calibri font, 12 point, and double spaced. All pages must
have a page number at the bottom. All paragraphs should be justified. Font must be
consistent throughout the paper.
e) The College of Business Administration of CSUSM requires students to follow a writing
rubric on any written assignment. This rubric is posted on Cougar Course and will serve
as the basis for grading, along with the other requirements listed above.
