USE OF RESEARCH IN CLINICAL PRACTICE
Throughout this course, you have examined and considered how the research process contributes to the field of clinical nursing practice. More than just an exercise in developing a research question, searching the literature to guide future research, and performing actual data collection/data analysis, the conclusions you draw from your research findings are useful in helping to develop and enact effective clinical practice. In essence, the process of conducting research contributes to positive social change in that the solutions that you might propose as a nurse researcher and professional will likely impact quality of care and patient safety.
For this Discussion, read the book chapter by Titler (2008) presented in this week’s resources that describes evidence-based practice and translational science, as well as the kind of research needed for both. Then, reflect on how the knowledge you gained about research will support your effort as a nursing professional to improve patient quality and safety.
Describe how you will use evidence-based practice to improve patient quality and safety in your health care setting. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain how the knowledge gained about research in this course will support your role in practice as a nursing professional. Then, describe how you will use evidence-based practice to improve patient quality and safety. Be sure to include in your Discussion any unanswered questions that need to be considered by your classmates and/or Instructor.
Note: Post a 3-paragraph (at least 350 words) response.

Use of Research in Clinical Practice
Through research, any scientific field can acquire and gain knowledge. Research has benefited and transformed the nursing discipline for better patient outcomes. The accumulated nursing knowledge base has been amassed through research, and any knowledge gap in this scientific domain has been filled and will be filled through scientific research. It is the only way to expand or add to the knowledge base accepted by the nursing profession. Through research, the practice of nursing has provided efficient, quality, and safe care for our ultimate beneficiary – our patients/clients; for this reason, it is deemed essential to learn, conduct, interpret, analyze, and critique research studies to benefit from its findings/conclusions, i.e., evidence-based practice (Titler, 2008).
Evidence-based practice is defined as using (quality) research results in nursing practice, integrating research knowledge with clinical practice – translation or application phase (Gray and Grove, 2021);
a problem-solving approach to clinical dilemmas with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes (Schaefer & Welton, 2018). Therefore, learning to be critical of research papers is essential to derive benefits from research studies; to find answers for clinical practice issues or questions that may come up while performing or in the performance of our chosen profession. This course has allowed me to understand nursing research better – from research question formulation to choosing the appropriate design and analysis methods to come up with valid and trustworthy conclusions, to interpreting results, and being critical of research findings for practical application to result in the best outcomes for our patients. Now I can better appreciate the routines we do in my area of outpatient clinic practice – why we call clients several days before to remind them of their appointment and encourage them to do the necessary blood work that needs to be completed prior to the visit; why we assess for falls, suicide or homicide ideation during every clinic visit; why we make sure all the visit reminders in the patient’s electronic chart, such as vaccination schedules, for example, influenza or shingles, are administered. These are just a few of our routines that the institution has adopted based on research evidence that these will result in the best outcome for our rheumatology older-age adult veteran population. Best practice guidelines from evidence-based nursing practice for the best patient outcomes (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2017). Everything we do is underpinned by quality research, whether from expert opinion, case reports, scientific principles, or randomized controlled trials with one goal in mind, i.e., improved quality and patient safety (Titler, 2008).

Operating within evidence-based practice involves high-quality care based on patient-centered professional research (Alatawi et al., 2020). As a practicing nurse, I am in a unique position to function in multiple departments within my facility to utilize evidence-based practice. This affords me the opportunity to interact with patients and colleagues at many levels throughout the patient’s stay. Because I can develop a relationship with the patient and their families prior to and after surgical procedures, I can begin education on hand hygiene, specifically on dressing changes, coupled with reinforcing the education in the recovery area when the patient has a dressing with an incision. I can use evidence-based practice as my guide for directing the patient and family on the cleanliness of hands and wound healing. The education I can provide will not end with patients and families. I can provide evidence-based education to my fellow colleagues to encourage their participation in the education of our patients and families as well.
In using the knowledge obtained regarding the different research methods, avenues for locating research materials, and analyzing data obtained through research, I feel confident I will be able to create a safe and healthy environment for the patients under my care. I will use the research methods I have learned, such as the Walden Library (with the Librarian’s assistance) and Google Scholar, to assist in locating scholarly articles necessary to support the education I am providing to both patients and colleagues as well as validate the care I am providing. This knowledge will continue to grow and follow me as I continue my educational journey as well as my career.
I will continue to utilize the methods previously mentioned to remain abreast of current practices while ensuring my patients, their families, and my colleagues are informed as well. I am now better informed of terminology to decipher studies, thereby allowing a better understanding of outcomes and limitations. Using this knowledge will allow me a greater ability to make informed decisions regarding new advances in practice.
