Write an organized, well-developed essay of approximately 700 words based on one of the following prompts. You may use up to two secondary sources, in addition to your primary source, but please document using MLA 8 or 9 style. Whichever prompt you choose, I expect to see frequent references, including direct quotes, to the work(s) you’re writing about. 1. Analyze a poem or story published since 2010. (Try looking in literary magazines like The Chattahoochee Review, Five Points, or the Georgia Review.) 2. Choose one of the poems or stories we talked about in class and offer an alternative analysis to the one I gave. 3. Choose two or three of the works on our reading list and compare or contrast them on some basis. (For example, both “Hills Like White Elephants” and “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” have female characters who seem to be dominated by male characters, while both “Young Goodman Brown” and “Where Are You Going” examine the nature of evil.) 4. Choose a song written since 1970 and analyze its lyrics as poetry. |
