BUSI 642
Human Resource Policy Project: Annotated Bibliography Assignment
Instructions
Overview
This project summarizes the research that will be used in the HRPP paper later in the course. The HRPP project allows you to select four HR policies that are relevant to a small business and to create a case for their inclusion in a handbook to employees.
Instructions
The annotated bibliography for your 4 selected human resource topics must consist of at least 10 reputable, practitioner sources (ex. SHRM) or scholarly journals. Sources are to be current (pubished within the last 5 years). Government websites (FLSA, EEO, etc.) can also count towards your sources (note some government websites will not be a match – such as the dress code for the Wisconsin’s FDA investigators. The .gov isn’t automatically an applicable source. Be in current APA format, and contain persistent links so others may have instant access. Include a proper title page. It is recommended that you review the HRPP paper instructions within the class (which explains the HRPP in more detail and has policy suggestions) and the writing center’s annotated bibliography example (linked below).
It is highly recommended that you use
Liberty University’s Jerry Falwell Library
online resources. A librarian is available to assist you in all matters pertaining to conducting your research, including what constitutes a scholarly article (reputable, professional and/or scholarly journals, and/or informational venues that deal with the content of the course).
The Jerry Falwell Library librarian has asked that the following be shared:
Articles in Business Source Premier have a “Permalink” you can use to post in your assignment. The permalink, in most cases, will allow anyone to access your article. Articles in Business Source Complete have a “Permalink” you can use in your assignment. The Permalink should allow anyone to access your article. To get the Permalink, look the article up in Business Source Complete and click the article title. Then click the “Permalink” link that appears in the right column.
The annotations are designed to help your classmates better understand and more easily learn about your topic. The annotation is not a normal required component of APA; rather, it is a specific additional requirement for this assignment. Note the following regarding your annotated bibliography:
· An annotated bibliography is a list of the journals and resources you used.
· Each citation is followed by a brief paragraph (at least 150 words) that is descriptive and evaluative—the annotation.
· The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.
· For more information on annotations, see this example from the writing center:

.

Contemporary Issues in HR Management: Annotated Bibliography
A Student
Liberty University Comment by Calland, David Russell (School of Business): Notice APA compliant title page and that annotations are close to 150 words long.
Do not simply cut and paste an abstract for your annotations. Doing so for any single entry will result in zero credit for the entire annotated bibliography.
Follow the course instructions regarding the development of content for your annotations.

The focus of this study is the perception of ethical business practices in thirteen countries representing Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The study hypothesized that the ethical behavior of a business organization is a function of individual characteristics and contextual factors. In short are the factors that are perceived as contributing to the creation of an ethical business culture the same or similar around the world. The study began with a literature review from each of the thirteen countries concerning business ethics. They then clustered large business in thirteen countries by region, East Asia South West Asia, Western Europe, Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin American, and
North America. The authors then survey 23 thousand employees of these large firms. The results of the study confirm that the Anglo ethics have become pervasive in the globalized market place. However, the study also shows that holistically there is still a disparity in ethical checks and balances with in regional business economies.

This week is the annotated bibliography (due Sunday). This is going to help you so much on the largest work in the class – the research paper. I recommend picking a type of small company in your mind of 15-25 employees (eye doctor, sports shop, coffee shop, lawn care, etc.). Not a franchise and something with employees (but not too many employees). Peek at the paper requirements for some samples of policies (be warned if you pick Code of Conduct this isn’t the formal CoC large firms use to report to investors this will be more formal rules for all of your employees. Pick four policies that are a good match. If I ran a lawn care business I might pick dress code, moonlighting, attendance, and paid time off. They don’t need to be the most important policies – just four. For the annotated bibliography I would look up 10 articles on these (about 2-3 each) on why a company should have a dress code or what small companies are doing with paid time off, etc. When I find 10 outstanding articles that are in the last 5 years I would write a short blurb on each (at least 150 words – all original to you) and put the reference in APA formatting. You can see examples of this in the assignment area. This is a lot of the footwork and it will make the writing of the actual paper so much easier. Make sure that the sources you use are scholarly and also relevant to the US and aren’t too specific to industry. A journal on discrimination in Transylvanian ceramic engineers is not going to have good carryover to your lawn care company. The definition of discrimination will vary by law as well. Please, feel free to run your choices by me. It can be as simple as an email with “I am thinking of using these for polices 1, 2, 3, 4. Any thoughts?”. I encourage you not to underestimate this work. It’s often a piece I see come in late. It’s not a hard piece but it does take time. Something like getting 2-4 sources together a day for a few days and writing that piece will really help you. Remember, you have 10 sources and four policies so you’re likely looking at 2-3 sources per policy. Keep in contact with any questions. Chances are I can clear up any confusion pretty fast and I know this is different than other work you have likely done. This week there is also the regular quiz and the second DQ forum due (look at my written comments on the first DQ in the gradebook to help you nail those points. You will need to open the rubric and scroll down to see my written comments. I always explain where points are lost). I do think that this week is the hardest week in the class in terms of work load. Start early. Catch snatches of time to work on things. Don’t wait for a perfect window of time at the end of the day. It doesn’t come and you’ll be tired.
One of the topics in this week’s reading is training and development. Ecclesiastes 8:11a (New International Bible. 1978/2011) tells us, “Wisdom is better than weapons of war” and in Ecclesiastes 10:18, “If man is lazy, the rafters sag; if his hands are idle, the house leaks”. As we train and develop ourselves in our careers, educations, and professions, remember that we need to develop ourselves spiritually as well. There is a temptation to stop that discipline as a school program draws to the ends (or ends) and although I encourage times of rest, I also encourage you to keep going and developing yourself. It could be as simple as sitting down for lunch with someone from another department and asking what they do and how they do it or attending a workshop.
