IT/BIFX 530 Applied Database SystemsER Design Exercise
We need to create a database ER design based on the following (simplified) requirements of the
COMPANY Database:
•
•
•
•
The company is organized into DEPARTMENTs. Each department has a name, number,
and an employee who manages the department. A department may have several
locations.
Each department controls a number of PROJECTs. Each project has a unique name,
unique number, budget, and a brief description.
We store each EMPLOYEE’s employee number, name, address, phone number, and
salary.
• Each employee works for one department but may work on several projects,
which are not necessarily controlled by the same department.
• We keep track of the start date of each employee working for their respective
department.
• We keep track of the number of hours per week that an employee currently works
on each project.
• We also keep track of the direct supervisor of each employee.
Each employee may have a number of DEPENDENTs.
• For each dependent, we keep track of their name, age, birthdate, and relationship
to the employee. We assume each dependent only has one parent who works for
the company.
Submission Instructions:
Choose one of the two notations covered in the lecture videos (and as shown in the ER design
practice sample solution) when creating your ER diagram. Draw your ER diagram using
software. You may use MS-PowerPoint or Word, MS-Paint, MS-Visio, Dia, draw.io,
DBDesigner, or whatever drawing software tool you know or is available to you. No
handwritten models will be accepted! Submit your ER diagram for this exercise through the
link on Blackboard.
