Have you ever been asked the question “are you happy?” You might have been asked this question by a family member, a friend, or even possibly an acquaintance. How do (would) you interpret this question? What sorts of thoughts float through your head before you answer that question?
Over the past couple of decades, there has been an increase in research conducted in the area of “positive psychology.” Researchers have been trying to answer the following questions: “What is the key to happiness?” Do you think that there is a “key” or maybe there are several “keys” to happiness? If so, then what do you think that they are?
Do you think that some people are generally happier than others? Is happiness primarily due to genetic make-up, personality differences, environmental and/or cultural influences?
Much research has been conducted on the effects of money on one’s happiness. What have been your observations and/or experiences with the relationship between money and happiness?
Here is some new research by Catapano, Quoidbach, Mogilner, & Aaker about the relationship between meaning, happiness, and income levels. This article will be published in an upcoming edition of “Emotion.” Here is a summary of the article on the Stanford Graduate School of Business website.

Please watch this Youtube video of a TED talk called “What makes a good life? Lessons from the Longest Study on Happiness.”
The video is about 13 minutes. The speaker is Dr. Robert Waldinger and he is the 4th director of this longitudinal study focused on young men from Harvard University and young men from a poverty-stricken Boston neighborhood.

What do you think about Dr. Robert’s findings in this 75 year old study? Do you see any problems with this study? Are you surprised by the results? How does this relate to your own perspective on happiness and life satisfaction?
Lastly what can (or do) you do to make yourself happier? What suggestions or advice would you give to someone who is feeling down, and trying to improve his/her mood?

For Week 9 (focusing on Chapter 11 — Health Psychology), there is ONE question that you are required to answer.
** You are required to write AT LEAST
500 words for this week’s assignment. If you are too brief in your writing assignment and/or you did not answer ALL of the question prompts, then you will be marked down.
We all have (and will continue to) experience stress in our lives. As you have read in my lecture notes and textbook,
stress is defined as “a person’s response to events that are threatening or challenging (Feldman, 2019, p.402).
1) Please describe a recent OR current stressor that you have experienced (or are experiencing).
2) Was it a positive (eustress) OR negative stressor (or both positive and negative)? Briefly explain.
3) What type of stressor was it? In other words, was it a cataclysmic, personal, or background stressor? Please also explain WHY you think that it was (is) this type of stressor.
4) How did you cope with this particular stressor and do you think that it was effective?
5) Describe TWO ways that you have dealt with stress in the past. Were they “emotion-focused” OR “problem-focused” ways of coping? In addition, please make sure that you
define
“emotion-focused coping” and “problem-focused coping.” Did they actually help in reducing your stress level?
6) Finally as noted by Feldman (the textbook author), some forms of coping are not very effective such as avoidant coping (e.g., wishful thinking, drug use) and the use of defense mechanisms (e.g., denial, emotional insulation). What do you think about these ineffective forms of coping? Have you ever experienced them? In what ways? If you do not feel comfortable discussing yourself, then you may share observation(s) of other people (e.g., family members, friends).
