ECO 4451 TERM PAPER
Your term paper will discuss a real-world issue highlighting the relationship between law and economics. You
will discuss the issue, the economic and legal matters central to the issue, the resolution of the issue (whether
it be a successful or an unsuccessful resolution), and future considerations relevant to the issues and resolution
of the matter. Your work must contain a minimum of 4 outside citations, which need to come either from
professional or legal journals/periodicals.
You may select your own topic for this paper, provided that you forward your suggestion to me prior to 6/9 and
I approve it. In the absence of self-selecting a topic, you may choose from the following subjects:

1. The case of U.S. v Microsoft Corporation: Antitrust issues
2. The case of U.S. v Sammy “The Bull” Gravano: Given the allegations of his crimes, why did he spend a
relatively short time in prison. Explain the legal and economic justifications
3. The objective of U.S. “Cap and Trade” policies, how these policies attempt to mitigate pollution externalities
using market mechanisms, and their successes/failures
4. Explain Federal income redistribution programs (i.e. welfare, etc.) and their relationship to the principles of
Pareto Optimality and Kaldor-Hicks. A discussion of utilitarianism is necessary for this effort, as well.

All information sources in the report must be referenced and cited. The report will be checked for
plagiarism with the Turnitin program.
Minimum of 3 graphs/tables/charts in the report, maximum of 5. Graphs should be labeled “Figure 1,
Figure 2, etc.”, Tables should be labeled “Table 1, Table 2, etc”. All graphs must be embodied within the
report narrative and not at the end of the report. No graphic shall cover more than 1/3 of the writing area
on any report page. Graphics must be consistent in size and formatting.
You must turn in both an MS Word and PDF version of this report by no later than 7/23 at 11:59 pm.
