Due by Tuesday, November 14th
Please submit your responses under Assessments / Assignments in D2L
Polynomials:
1) A function has the following solutions 3, -2, 3-2i, 3+2i
(a) Write an equation for the function in factored form
(b) Expand your answer for (a) to write the expanded form of the function in the form
𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎4 𝑥 4 + 𝑎3 𝑥 3 + 𝑎2 𝑥 2 + 𝑎1 𝑥 + 𝑎0
2) Solve the following polynomial for any REAL and Complex solutions. Indicate which are the real
solutions and which are the complex solutions.
𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 5 + 𝑥 4 − 25𝑥 3 + 73𝑥 2 − 121𝑥 + 70
3) Use the graph of f(x) from (2)- you do NOT need to submit your graph. Answer the following:
When is f(x) Increasing?
When is f(x) Decreasing?
Find any Local Max?
Find any Local Min?
Find the Global Max (if it exists)?
Find the Global Min (if it exists)?
How many turning points?
Find f(0)
Miniproject for Chapter 7 and 8
Math 1105 Intro to Prob and Stats
Name_____________________
Listed below are the numbers of deaths from lightning strikes in the United States each year for a
sequence of 14 recent and consecutive years. Compare and Contrast your results from each of the two
techniques required below. Show your work and write a paragraph to summarize both similarities and
differences between the two methods.

Form a Confidence Interval (10 points)
Use the sample values given above to construct a 99% confidence interval estimate of the
population mean. Assume that the population has a normal distribution. Write a brief
statement that interprets the confidence interval.
2) Conduct a Hypothesis Test for Lightning Deaths (10 points)
Use the data above at the .01 level of significance to test the claim that the mean number of
annual lightning deaths is less than the mean of 72.6 deaths from the 1980’s. Interpret the
results of your hypothesis test.
3)
Compare and Contrast: (10 points) In what ways do the methods agree, and in what ways do
they disagree? What is the same in both methods, what is different? Do the two methods
appear to have the same conclusion? Why or why not?
