Connection to the audience: Who in my audience knows the name of the front man
for the band Maroon V?
Topic: I am here to discuss singer and actor Adam Levine.
Thesis (3-4 main points): I will reveal his childhood, his career, and his family.
Establish credibility: My research for this speech was found in Current Biography,
Billboard, Rolling Stone, and US Weekly.”
Transition 1: First, we will explore his childhood.
I Childhood. (Main Point 1: Source: Current Biography.)
His parents are Patsy Noah and Fred Levine. Mr. Levine owned a men’s fashion
boutique clothing chain in Los Angeles named M. Fredric.
When Levine was five years old, his parents divorced.
Levine inherited his love of rock music from his mother, who, he said, would sit in the
car with him and listen to Beatles songs. Also, he attended his first concert with his
father while he was in fifth grade. They saw the hair-metal band Warrant at the Santa
Monica Civic Auditorium.
Suffering from bad acne, Levine was a self-conscious and somewhat shy teenager,
even as he pursued his musical ambitions.
Levine has cited Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones, U2, Prince, Talking Heads, Michael
Jackson, Quincy Jones, and Herbie Hancock as early and major influences on his
musical development.
Transition 2: Next we will explore his music career.
II Music Career. (Main Point II: Source: Rolling Stone)
A Rolling Stone article shared by the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Maroon V band
consists of Levine, guitarist James Valentine, bassist Mickey Madden, keyboardist PJ
Morton, guitarist Sam Farrar and drummer Matt Flynn. They together hit the top spot on
the Billboard charts with songs arts beginning in the mid-2000s with “This Love,”
“Makes Me Wonder,” “She Will Be Loved” and 13 other hits.
Valentine readily admits that Levine’s breakout movie and TV stardom has been an
undeniable boost.
Transition 3: Next, let’s explore his movie and TV careers.
III Movie and TV Career (Main Point III: Sources: Biography Reference Bank and
Rolling Stone.)
According to Biography Reference Bank, Levine joined NBC’s talent competition series
The Voice in 2011 as one of the four coaches. He also sang a song that year “Moves
Like Jagger,” with one of his fellow judges, Christina Aguilera.
According to two Rolling Stone articles, Adam Levine has acted in movies and TV
series.
Levine made his film debut in “Begin Again.” Another Rolling Stone article reports
“Begin Again” is the story of a record producer, named Dan, played by Mark Ruffalo. He
meets British Greta (Kiera Knightley) who, after five years, is dumped by her cheating
boyfriend. Levine plays the cheating Dave Kohl, who is a suddenly famous rock star.
Also starring in the movie as Dan’s family is music-journalist wife played Catherine
Keener, who has left Dan, and their teen daughter, played Hailee Steinfeld. All of these
performers have been nominated for Oscars, according to the article.
Knightly and Levine both sing several versions of the Oscar-nominated song “Lost
Stars,” written by New Radicals frontman Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisbois of
Archie Bunker fame.
Transition 4: Last of all, I will discuss his family.
IV Family. (Main Point IV: Sources: The Hollywood Reporter and US Weekly.)
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levine married Victoria’s Secret model Behati
Prinsloo on July 19, 2015, in a tent at Flora Farms in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, in
front of 300 guests, including The Voice costar Blake Shelton, singer Stevie Nicks, and
actor Jonah Hill, who officiated. The couple, who became engaged in July 2013, will
honeymoon in South Africa.
According to US Weekly, the couple welcomed their first child, daughter Dusty Rose,
September 21, 2016.
Maroon 5 postponed seven of the group’s concerts. Levine said in a September 2,
2016, Twitter video he wanted the planned home birth to go “as smooth as possible.”
Closing Restatement of topic and thesis: Today, we have discussed Adam Levine’s
childhood, music career, movie and TV career, and his family.
