Reflect on the assigned readings for this module. What challenges do medical facilities face when trying to become more culturally competent? What kinds of assumptions do providers sometimes make about people from other cultures? What factors may cause providers to relate to patients in a biased manner? What can healthcare organizations do to ensure cultural competence among their employees? When responding to your classmates, evaluate their responses. Do you agree or disagree with their suggestions, and why?
Peer 1: Hi all,
As mentioned in the readings, medical facilities are facing cultural challenges, especially in the face of modern medicine. One challenge medical facilities can face when trying to become more culturally competent is lumping people together. For example, I know of someone who is deaf and doesn’t know sign language and prefers to use their cochlear implants. And while yes you might have two separate patients who share the same religion or background, they may not practice it the same or at all. Instead of lumping patients together, it is important that healthcare providers learn what the individual needs and prefers. This prevents the provider from treating the patient in a biased manner. To help this, healthcare organizations can provide annual training to remind providers that they are treating the individual and that everyone has different cultural practices.

there are many challenges that healthcare facilities are facing but I believe the biggest one would be is the cultural challenges. Healthcare facilities sometimes tend to not look at the cultural differences among patients and how they may create a treatment plan differently to respect their events. The same can be said for people with certain disabilities just because two patients may have the same disability does not mean that their treatment plans or needs are going to be the same. Healthcare providers need to take a lot of factors into account when treating as well as communicating with the different patients they care for every day. Healthcare providers must learn the needs and accommodate what a specific patient is asking from them for their treatment plan. They need to no make a biased plan and realize just because it’s the same illness or disability it is not going to be the same treatment.
