CLASSMATE’S DISCUSSION 1
Paraphrasing is the ability to show your client that you are actively listening and engaged
in the content of their thoughts. This technique is vital as a counselor to show the client
that you are actively listening and understanding what they are divulging. Furthermore,
this technique can help simplify to the client the message they are trying to convey.
Listening with a positive attitude is essential for the counselor to be able to build a
rapport with the client.
Paraphrasing will allow the client to go further in-depth with expressing their thoughts
once the counselor recognizes their thoughts are valid and are not being judged
negatively.
Parroting will not have the effects as paraphrasing because the counselor is simply
repeating the content of the client’s information back without thinking and
understanding the content.
CLASSMATE’S DISCUSSION C.J
The concept of paraphrasing in relationship to the helper is actively listening to your
client tell their story. Then, the helper takes essential parts of their account by
reinstating what is vital to the client. Unlike parroting, the helper would play back word
for word what their client just developed during that particular session.
What are the essential components of paraphrasing? First, the helper reflects to the
client on what is essential. Secondly, the helper should always remain focused during a
counseling session. Thirdly, The helper is always intuned with their client’s
feelings. Fourthly, a helper should not interrupt their client. Lastly, be an active listener.
How is paraphrasing different then parroting? The helper would be repeating words
verbatim back to their client. There would be not conscious connection between the
helper and their client. At that point, the helper could loose a client.
