Methodology
PICOT Question
In patients aged 60 and older with chronic diseases, does technology integration of
wearable devices for medication adherence, compared to no intervention, to improve medication
adherence rates and overall health outcomes over a 6-month period?
Sample/Setting
The research aims to include a sample of patients diagnosed with chronic illnesses who
actively utilize technology for managing their health conditions. To align with the professor’s
feedback for novice researchers, the sample size for each group will be limited to 30 participants.
The inclusion criteria involve individuals aged 18 years and above, diagnosed with chronic
diseases (such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases), and actively utilizing
technology (smartphone apps, wearable devices, digital reminders) for medication management.
The data collection will occur in healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics, or specialized
chronic disease management centers. These settings offer access to a diverse pool of patients
managing chronic conditions using technology and provide a conducive environment for
collecting qualitative data through interviews or focus group discussions.
Sampling Strategy
The sampling strategy will be purposive or purposeful, focusing on selecting 30
participants per group who meet specific criteria relevant to the research objectives. The
selection process will involve identifying and recruiting patients from various healthcare

facilities meeting the inclusion criteria. Snowball sampling might be considered to access
potential participants who might not be easily reachable through conventional means. This
strategy aims to gather diverse experiences and perspectives regarding technology integration
and medication adherence among individuals with chronic illnesses, ensuring depth and richness
in data collection.
Research Design
The research design selected for this study is a qualitative approach, specifically
phenomenological or ethnographic design, with a sample size of 30 participants per group. A
qualitative design aligns with the study’s objectives, exploring and understanding patients’ lived
experiences, perceptions, and beliefs about technology utilization and medication adherence. The
phenomenological design allows researchers to delve deeply into participants’ subjective
experiences and meanings attached to their healthcare behaviors. Ethnographic design, on the
other hand, enables a comprehensive understanding of the cultural and contextual aspects
influencing medication adherence and technology use among individuals with chronic illnesses.
The rationale for choosing a qualitative design lies in its ability to capture nuanced insights,
aligning with the Health Belief Model’s theoretical concepts and the research’s qualitative nature.
In essence, the methodology for this research involves selecting a purposive sample of 30
patients per group managing chronic illnesses using technology, conducting data collection in
healthcare settings, employing purposive sampling to gather diverse perspectives, and utilizing a
qualitative design (phenomenological or ethnographic) with a sample size of 30 participants per
group to explore patients’ experiences and perceptions regarding technology integration and
medication adherence. This approach ensures a comprehensive understanding of the complex
