This is the Works Cited page with 5 sources of reference. Remember it should be listed in alphabetical order.
Now, I will write an
Annotated Bibliography
of each of the 5 sources.
· An
annotation is a summary and/or evaluation. Therefore, an
annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources.
This is what to do for this assignment:
The task is to write 2 paragraphs for each source:
Paragraph 1 is a summary of the source (book, article, essay, interview, magazine, journal, Website, etc.)
Paragraph 2 is about why you chose this source. How does it contribute to the points you are arguing on your essay?
—————————————————————————————-
Paragraph #1 Summarize: Some annotations merely summarize the source.
·
What are the main arguments?
·
What is the point of this book or article?
·
What topics are covered? If someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say?
·
The length of your annotations will determine how detailed your summary is.
Paragraph #2 Reflect: Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research.
·
Was this source helpful to you?
·
How does it help you shape your argument?
·
How can you use this source in your research project?
·
Has it changed how you think about your topic?

1)Ajuria Ibarra, Enrique. “Permanent hauntings: spectral fantasies and national trauma in Guillermo del Toro’s El espinazo del diablo [The Devil’s Backbone].”
Journal of Romance Studies 12.1 (2012): 56+.
Literature Resource Center. Web. 25 Mar. 2016.
Paragraph 1 is a summary of the source (book, article, essay, interview, magazine, journal, Website, etc.)
This critical essay refers to Guillermo del Toro’s
The Devil’s Backbone (2001), and the idea of accepting the presence of a ghost, or revenant during the times of the Spanish Civil War intending to come to terms with it by means of traumatic historical events. Therefore, the ghost gains relevance over the subject who happens to relive situations that have been left aside, but that are indeed traumatic experiences that have even “marked the subject’s unconscious” in relation to the Spanish nation and identity in more contemporary times.
Paragraph 2 is about why you chose this source. How does it contribute to the points you are arguing on your essay
The significance of the plot specific mechanics includes accepting the idea of the ghost as an entity that represents the relationship between the tragic experiences of the Spanish Civil War versus the supernatural in Guillermo del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone (2001). The ghost of Santi portrays fear since it makes reference to how unconsciously in Spain, tragic and traumatic past experiences may occur again in the future.
2) Chun, Kimberly. “What is a ghost?: An Interview with Guillermo Del Toro.”
Cineaste Spring 2002: 28+.
Literature Resource Center. Web. 28 Mar. 2016.
Paragraph 1 is a summary of the source (book, article, essay, interview, magazine, journal, Website, etc.)
The following is an interview to Guillermo del Toro considered by then as a rising talent and whose multifaceted cinematic figures are emphasized.
Cronos is referred to as a film which happens to be “elegant yet visceral” in the way it portrays its zombie horror scenes that have definitely established a growing reputation as an ambitious characteristic in the film director. The interview also mentions the works coproduced with Pedro and Agustin Almodovar such as
The Devil’s Backbone, a film about the Spanish Civil War and dealing with issues of violence, war, and fascism. Del Toro is also praised for
Mimic, an environmental-horror film that he actually co-wrote with David Munoz and Antonio Trashorras where the Gothic and politics are combined as part of a hybrid war film.
Paragraph 2 is about why you chose this source. How does it contribute to the points you are arguing on your essay
Cronos can be related to Chun’s interview in the sense that the fantastic can be linked to everyday life situations. Jesus Gray owns an antique store and has a family waiting for him at home. He seems to lead a normal way of living. On the other hand, his faith is placed in immortality showing a dual aspect in the character.
3) Davies, Ann, Deborah Shaw, and Dolores Tierney.
The Transnational Fantasies of Guillermo Del Toro. N.p.: n.p., n.d. Print.
Paragraph 1 is a summary of the source (book, article, essay, interview, magazine, journal, Website, etc.)
This book explores through meticulous discussions Del Toro’s Spanish and English language works that portrays his film production contributions as a recognized and emblematic director. In Chapter Two of this anthology, Ann Davis claims that monsters in films defy what the audience expects from a normal human appearance and have special characteristics or physical features.
Paragraph 2 is about why you chose this source. How does it contribute to the points you are arguing on your essay
Del Toro is “dissected” in the analysis of his works in both languages. The director works multiple areas of the film industry where his creations also involve a large variety of articles, and manuscripts about different trends. For instance, Guillermo del Toro: Film as Alchemic Art, written by Roger Clark and Keith McDonald, or
The Supernatural Cinema of Guillermo Del Toro: Critical Essays written by John Morehead, who makes a thorough analysis of Del Toro’s most famous works.
4) Davies, Laurence. “Guillermo Del Toroʹs Cronos, or the Pleasures of Impurity.”
Gothic Science Fiction: 1980–2010, edited by SARA WASSON and EMILY ALDER, 1st ed., vol. 41, Liverpool University Press, 2011, pp. 87–101.

Paragraph 1 is a summary of the source (book, article, essay, interview, magazine, journal, Website, etc.)
In this article, Wasson and Alder’s main point is to explain what historical conditions could make us think there is a difference between Science Fiction and the Gothic, “… [Q]uestioning the implicit agendas of generic classification itself.” Wasson links issues dealing with ethics as related to organ tissue transfer. Therefore, her analysis deals with the evolution of technology and medical practices. In
Cronos Dieter de la Guardia is a wealthy old man whose health is decaying drastically and this situation makes him become obsessed with life. Dieter tells his nephew Angel de la Guardia that he should have taken the heart of Jesus Gris. Dieter’s room is full of mutilated bodies from where he apparently manages to extend his life. It seems like the bodies of the supposed donors were taken by force, since Dieter de la Guardia is a very powerful man.
Paragraph 2 is about why you chose this source. How does it contribute to the points you are arguing on your essay
The authors make a note of Roger Luckhurst and Fred Botting as to how they provide with a map of the distinguishing characteristics between the Gothic and Science Fiction. It seems like there are some similarities between the demons and ghosts found in the Gothic as opposed to Sci-Fi aliens. Moreover, both genres expose situations in which unknown worlds are explored and they both project fear of facing the unknown, the uncanny.
5) Morehead, John W. “The Supernatural Cinema of Guillermo Del Toro: Critical Essays.”
Academia.edu. McFarland” May-June 2015. Web. 21 June 2016.
Paragraph 1 is a summary of the source (book, article, essay, interview, magazine, journal, Website, etc.)
This critical essay establishes a link between Del Toro and his particular passion for monsters, to the point that in his early years, he would make them himself and present them on television shows and movies in Mexico. He also loves make-ups, and the talented creators who bring magic to the screen. In the Foreword by Doug Jones, Del Toro is described as the type of director who absorbs all the possible information about the cast, and has good relationships with them. He also gets involved with all sorts of art such as, dance, music movies, sculptures, and just about anything that he finds useful toward film production.
Paragraph 2 is about why you chose this source. How does it contribute to the points you are arguing on your essay
Ann Davies states, “Yet
Cronos is not just
another vampire tale. Rather than merely incorporating often-used conventions, the film distorts and reshapes them.” Del Toro’s presence can be noted by his talent on creating an atmosphere in which Jesus Gris is not only a vampire all the time, but at his own will. Basically, he decides when to become a vampire and when to stay human, and this is far from conventional.
The Final Argumentative Research Project has 4 steps
First, choose an open topic
The topic chosen is to be used for all 4 steps as discussed in class.
If you wrote the proposal on a different topic, that will be fine.
For example: If the topic is The Cask of Amontillado

Paper Proposal (Abstract and Thesis Statement) Instructions
The Paper Proposal assignment is divided into 2 parts: 1. 2. |
Refer to the prompts below in order to create a research proposal that will provide you direction and a strong basis for your writing. In addition, I will have the opportunity to look over your progress and help guide you toward an even stronger writing project.
The assignment does not consist of answering to these prompts. These are suggestions to be considered toward its development.
1.
What is the working title for your essay?
2.
Explain your interest in this topic. In other words,
why did you choose this subject to write on (beyond it simply being in your field of study)?
3.
What is the tentative claim/thesis of your essay? You should express this idea in 1-2 sentences, so make sure that your claim is as specific as possible. (Note: This argument may alter in scope and focus as you progress; you are not wholly committed to it.)
4.
No word count, but usually one page in length.
5.
How will your research and writing help to inform and/or benefit your audience? In other words, what is the larger goal of arguing about this topic?
