Industry and Problem
Solace Hospice Care of Charlotte County employs 40 nurses who provide end of life care to people with terminal illnesses. Solace has recently purchased automated IV infusion pumps, to assist nurses with improving care and eliminating errors. Nursing staff will need training on how to effectively use the new IV infusion pumps.
Impact and Stakeholders
The stakeholders are Solace Hospice Care, the nurses, patients, and the patients’ families.
Solace Hospice Care will see an increase in nursing productivity with less time spent setting up and administering drugs. Medical errors will be reduced; therefore, complaints and lawsuits will be minimized. It will also make the company attractive to prospective new employees.
Patients will have correct, and timely administration of medicines and will receive more attentive care.
Patient’s families will have peace of mind knowing that their loved one is receiving correct and consistent dosages.
Training Goals
Even though goals and objectives both focus on what the learner will be able to do after instruction, they are not the same thing. Goals are generally broad statements about the instruction’s outcome. Goals can be used as topics that help to organize the learning objectives, which are more specific (Brown & Green, 2020).
Goal 1 – Students will be able to operate the Plum 360 IV Infusion Pump. |
Goal 2 – Students will be able to explain to others the basic functions of the Plum 360 IV Infusion Pump. |

Instructor will be able to observe the students successfully operating the IV infusion pump in a class setting. |
Students will be able to accurately explain how the pump works, what the alarms mean, and how to address pump alarms. |
A |
Students already have training on how to administer and monitor IV drip infusion. The training for the smart IV infusion pump will be conducted in-person with hands on training, ensuring that students are able to get questions answered, while they learn. |
The instructor will be able to provide constructive and timely feedback. Training is conducted in-person, which means any inaccuracies or misunderstandings can be cleared up, as students learn. |
R |
The new IV infusion pump will be used by all staff. Students will need to know how to use the new smart infusion pump before using it on patients. |
Nursing staff work with patients and families, who are stockholders in patient care. The patients and their families may need to address infusion pump alarms and will need to understand fundamentals about how the pump works. Staff will need to be effective at communicating information about the IV infusion pump. |
T |
Solace intends to begin replacing all drip infusion systems, with the new Plum 360 IV infusion system in 2 months. All staff will need to know how to operate it, in the event staff are required to cover patient care for another nurse. |
Once all nursing staff begin implementing the new Plum 360 IV infusion system, they will need to provide basic information to patients and families on the new system. Solace intends this to occur in 2 months. |
Rationale for Instructional Intervention
The Plum 360 smart IV infusion pumps are a new piece of equipment that staff members have not used before. Nursing staff will need to become familiar with the technological aspects and how to program the pump. This training will ensure all staff have received the same training, within a set period of time. All staff will be trained before the new IV infusion pumps are used.
The Plum 360 smart IV infusion pumps come with alarms. An IV infusion system will generate an alarm for many different reasons, to include IV bag fluid, air in the line, etc. Alarm fatigue can cause users to ignore or disable the alarm system. Providing instruction to patients and their families on how to address alarms can reduce the chances of infusion pump failure.
