“Instructional designers engage in needs analysis when they are responding to a request for assistance” (Brown & Green, 2020).
Several perspectives on needs analysis were discussed in the chapter. What key elements for conducting a needs analysis do these perspectives have in common? How do these perspectives differ?
The key elements for conducting a needs analysis that these perspectives have in common is the need for change and the strive to change. The different is how each one does it.
Each perspective is different. Such as the Rossett and Smith and Ragan.
Rossett has five steps:
1.
Determine purposes based on initiators
2.
Identify sources
3.
Select tools
4.
Conduct the needs assessment in stages
5.
Use findings for decision-making (Brown & Green, 2020).
Smith and Ragan also have give steps, however theirs are different:
1.
List the goals of the instructional system
2.
Determine how well the identified goals are already being achieved
3.
Determine the gaps between “what is” and “what should be.”
4.
Prioritize gaps according to agreed-upon criteria
5.
Determine which gaps are instructional needs and which are most appropriate for design and development of instruction (Brown & Green, 2020).
Each of these end up to the finish goal of figuring out the need of what needs to be done.
Describe an instructional design scenario where you believe a formal needs analysis would not need to be conducted.
I’m honestly stuck on this question, as I cannot think of a scenario at the moment. In almost every situation I have been in personally, there is always a space for a needs analysis to be conducted. If I manage to think of one during the week I will reply to my post with one, but as of right now, I cannot bring myself to think of one, and it’s taken me all day to write this part of this post. Haha!
Is it appropriate to conduct a needs analysis when preparing instruction in a K-12 setting? How might one go about conducting a needs analysis for instruction to be delivered in a 3rd-grade classroom?
I think it is appropriate to conduct a needs analysis then preparing instruction in a K-12 setting, but that is because each student works differently. I view a needs analysis, specifically for a 3rd-grade classroom would be looking at how each student works and gather what they share as a common strength. If anything, use IEPs and BIPs to help with the students success within the classroom in order to reach the goal for the classroom.
