The writing assignment comes from Going Farther #2 in your text–pp. 32-42. There are two reading selections. The first is by African-American author Alice Walker. The second is by naturalist Ted Kersote. Both pieces concern animal rights and each author comes to a conclusion.
Your author, Anthony Weston, provides an analysis of Walker’s piece. Weston carefully highlights the ethical issues Walker addresses. He does not do this for Kersote’s piece.
You are to write a descriptive/comparison piece of 350 words to 750 words comparing and contrasting Walker’s and Kersote’s reasoning for coming to their conclusions. Specifically, I want you to assess whether Walker and Kersote have common ground regarding what humans should or should not eat.
Note: There is no correct answer. What I am looking for is how well you understand each position and what common ground, if any, you can identify.
