In the reading from philosopher Nel Noddings, she says that we should take “relation as ontologically basic”. She defines this as something we should recognize as fundamental, that is “recognize human encounter and affective response as a basic fact of human existence.” Here the word “affective” means “feelings and emotions.”
This is a central claim made by Care Ethics—the recognition of the human. Recall the Levinas and Buber insights on recognizing the other as central to existence. My question for you is which is more basic: consciousness of self, or consciousness of the other? If it is consciousness of self, then what does this mean for Care Ethics? Does it matter?
