Assignment 1
Diversity and Ethical Codes
A manager at your company overhears another employee who is Caucasian directing the
N-word at an African-American employee. When she confronts him, he claims that he
was using it as a term of endearment—a claim that is not explicitly contested by the
“friend” to whom he’s directing it. The manager, concerned that her being Caucasian and
in a position of authority, fears her intervention may escalate things, so she chose to
accept the explanation and move on. The manager has come to you, the Human
Resources Manager, for advice.
In a 4-page paper (excluding references and title page), discuss the following:
Your company’s diversity code states:
“As team members, we have a responsibility to:
a) Do our part to help Acme to serve and earn business from a wide variety of
communities and stakeholders.
b) Integrate diversity into our sourcing processes.
c) Help create an environment in which all team members can contribute,
develop, and fully use their talents.
d) Keep an open mind to new ideas, and listen to different points of view.”
What are some of the limitations of the company’s diversity code for multicultural
professional practice? In what ways do you believe this code is culturally biased and
culturally encapsulated? What evidence is there that this code is culturally sensitive? If
you believe there is no evidence that the code is culturally sensitive, what evidence is
there that the code is not culturally sensitive? Discuss the importance of cultural
sensitivity, and explain what you believe are the implications for ethical professional
practice. In addition to the required readings, cite at least two additional references that
include examples of a better ethical code.
Assignment 2
Ethical Practice and Legislation
Clients must be assured that all aspects of their communication with any professional
regarding themselves or their family members will be held in the strictest confidence.
Clients who cannot trust professionals to treat information as confidential may withhold
information that is important to investigation, assessment, and treatment. When
professionals disregard the privacy of their clients, the clients are injured in obvious
and/or subtle ways. A professional code of ethics provides guidance here. Codes of
ethics fulfill three major objectives: to educate professionals about sound ethical
conduct, to provide a mechanism for professional accountability, and to be a catalyst for
improving practice. In this way, they provide a foundation for professional competency
and integrity.
In a 4-page paper (excluding references and title page), discuss how your professional
ethics code fulfills these objectives. As ethical issues are also influenced by legislation,
discuss how you believe legislation could likewise contribute to the fulfillment of these
objectives. Discuss the most significant ways that you believe legislation and ethical
codes can affect your future professional practice. To support your ideas, cite one or
more landmark court cases from our readings addressing responsible ethical and legal
professional practice, and discuss implications for ethical and responsible practice. This
paper should reflect an integration of your knowledge of ethical practice, ethical codes,
and legislative influences on professional practice. In addition to the required readings,
cite at least two scholarly references.
Assignment 3
Ethical Dilemmas
In a 4-page paper, explain what you would do if you found an unethical practice in your
workplace. Would it depend on the severity of the unethical practice?
Provide a couple examples of potential unethical practices in your organization that
could be considered very minor that people have come to “accept” as opposed to
reporting.
Justify why you think that people tend to accept some unethical practices while others
are not accepted. Create a continuum of severity model regarding ethical practices in
organizations and discuss your model. How did you arrive at the model you created?
Assignment 4
Competency Case Dilemma
In a 4-page paper (excluding references and title page), discuss a competency-related
scenario or a case of your choice, either from our readings or related to a situation that
you have encountered in which you address the specific steps you would take to
embrace ethical practices in your work. In what ways does the scenario you have
selected present an ethical, legal, professional, or moral problem related to competency
issues? In what way does your professional code of conduct offer possible solutions or
opportunities for resolution? What are the implications of your ethical decision-making
and actions for the client in this case, for those related to the client, and for you as a
professional? In addition to the required readings, cite at least two additional
