Discuss a situation where an activity or game has helped you learn a concept.
A time where an activity helped me learn a concept was when I was in school for my undergrad. It was my first semester as a college student. I was extremely nervous because this was a new experience for me. When I walked into the classroom I noticed that there were also many people who looked nervous. Everyone either smiled or said hello to one another. We all waited in the classroom quietly before the professor walked in. As soon as the professor walked in he introduced himself to the class and discussed what the course will be about. From there he told everyone to get up from their seats. We all were wondering why we were getting up. He then proceeds to tell us that we are going to do an ice breaker. He explained the importance of having an ice breaker and how it helps with the first day jitters. This ice breaker involved asking the class about themselves and having to repeat what others have said. Once it was the next person’s turn to introduce themselves they had to retell what the person previously had said and then introduce themselves. This game included actively listening and participation. The energy in the room was great, everyone was listening, introducing themselves, and getting to know one another. This was a great activity to practice our active listening. I learned that icebreakers are a great way to get to know one another and to help with nervousness. Ice breakers are a great technique to incorporate into the classroom especially when it is the first week of school. This is a great way to help students with the first day jitters and a great way for them to introduce themselves and get to know one another. The icebreaker I did in college was a great way for students to engage and listen. The icebreaker focused on repetitiveness. We had to pay close attention because we had to repeat what the previous person said. We used our memory for this activity. In the text,
Early Literacy in Preschool and Kindergarten: A multicultural Perspective Janice Beaty states that children learn language through situations that occur through the conversations they engage in or listen to with the children and adults around them (Beaty, 2014). This connects to the activity I did because for the icebreaker we had to utilize our listening and memorization skills. From this activity we were able to learn about one another. Children learn language by communicating and listening to what people say around them. They are able to repeat the words that they hear and expand their language. Children also learn new words and recognize sounds from memorizing songs and rhymes. In the text Beaty states, “Many children are eager to spend time with an adult who actively listens to them” (Beaty, chapter 5 2014). Here Beaty explains the importance of being an active listener. It is important we listen to our students and amplify their voices. We must provide students a place where they are seen, safe, and heard.
