The fascinating field of mental health has always been of my interested and I have always been very passionate about it. In the United States one in every five adults is suffering with mental health issues and the shortage of mental health nurses is complicating the situation. We all know that mental health has become one of the most important and sensitive areas of care where experts and mental health specialists can perform their role to lower down the rate of mental health diseases. The shortage of mental health nurse practitioners in the United States is the first and most important reason to make this decision. The lack of effective mental health access and treatment is creating a crisis and negatively affecting every American family and community (American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA), 2019). I want to impact the community in addressing mental health issues and plan to expand my knowledge and expertise to be able to do so on safely and effective manner to be able to make an impact in the lives of mentally ill individuals and obtain a positive result and patient outcomes.

My journey to becoming a PMHNP began with a personal interest in mental health, which I discovered through my own struggles with anxiety and depression. As a young adult, I was determined to pursue a career in the field and provide care to those dealing with similar issues (Mangano,2020). After much research, I decided that a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) program was the best fit for me. My journey to becoming a PMHNP was long, but it was worth it. I started by completing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and gaining experience as a Registered Nurse. After that, I completed a Master of Science in Nursing degree and went on to become a Board Certified PMHNP.
The journey was challenging, but also rewarding. Through my studies and clinical rotations, I gained a deeper understanding of mental health and the role of the PMHNP in providing individualized care to patients. I learned how to assess and diagnose mental health disorders, create treatment plans, and provide psychotherapy. I also gained valuable experience in prescribing medications and providing patient management and follow-up care (Peterson,2019)
I am now a practicing PMHNP and I am committed to providing quality care to my patients. I am grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those who struggle with mental health issues.

A PMHNP is a highly trained advanced practice nurse who provides comprehensive mental health care to individuals, families, and communities. PMHNPs assess, diagnose, and treat mental health disorders, and provide therapeutic interventions to help individuals achieve optimal mental health (Chapman et al., 2019). When I was a registered nurse working in the mental health area, I first made the decision to become a PMHNP. I was drawn to the field because of my passion for helping others, and my interest in understanding the complexities of mental health. I became more conscious of the stigma around mental health concerns, as well as the disadvantaged population in need of help. I had a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of those affected by mental health disorders and to help reduce the stigma.
I began to research the PMHNP role, and was inspired by the stories of those who had made a positive change in the lives of their patients. I knew that the PMHNP role would allow me to provide direct care to patients and to have a more significant impact on their lives (Abram et al., 2020). I was excited by the prospect of being able to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health disorders, and provide therapeutic interventions. Additionally, I was drawn to the PMHNP role because of the opportunity to collaborate with other healthcare professionals and to take a more holistic approach to mental health care. I felt that I could best use my skills and passions as a PMHNP, and can have a bigger effect on the lives of those who are afflicted by mental health problems. The images I attached are different.

The pictures of me deciding to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner are different. When I first decided to pursue this career path, I was a student in high school. At the time, I had yet to learn what the role of a PMHNP entailed and had no idea how I would get there. The pictures that come to my mind when I think of my decision to pursue this career are of me in the library, researching the role of a PMHNP, talking to my guidance counselor, and meeting with potential mentors. These are the moments that I reflect on when I think of how I decided to pursue this career path.
When I was in high school, I was a voracious reader. I spent much time in the library and loved researching different career paths and learning what it would take to get there. I slowly became increasingly interested in the role of a PMHNP, and I started to ask my guidance counselor for advice. She was very supportive of my decision, and she was able to provide me with many resources that helped me make my decision.
I also had the opportunity to meet with some potential mentors. These included people who had already been practicing as a PMHNP, and they were able to give me insights into the job and what it would take to get there (Phoenix & Chapman, 2020). They also gave me much invaluable advice, such as what courses to take, what internships I should apply for, and more. This was an excellent way for me to understand the role better and make sure I was making the best decision for my future. I saw what I could do with this career. I attended a few conferences and seminars, and I was able to learn about the different treatments and therapies that I could provide as a PMHNP. This was the final step for me in deciding to pursue this path.
These pictures come to mind when considering my decision to become a PMHNP. They are very different from the images I might use to represent my current work, such as patients I have treated or a successful therapy session. But they are an essential part of my story and remind me of how far I have come since I decided to pursue this career.

A patient with mental health problems was brought to my attention one day when I was working as a registered nurse at a hospital (American Nurses Association, 2020). It was evident that the patient, a young mother, needed more help than I could provide her in my capacity as a registered nurse.
I realized the importance of mental health to the patient’s well-being as I cared for them (ANA, 2020). When I realized I wanted to do more for patients like this, I looked into psychiatric-mental health nursing as an area of advanced practice nursing.
As I thought more and more about the possibility of a career change, I began researching PMHNP programs (American Nurses Association, 2020). The more I learned about the PMHNP position, the more I realized it was the ideal career for me.
I was drawn to nursing because of its focus on people’s health and well-being. I put in a lot of time and effort, and now I’m a certified PMHNP (ANA, 2020). Because of the patient who motivated me to enter this field, I can now provide my full range of services to people and families struggling with mental health issues.
I use the picture of the mother holding her child to represent the importance of caring for the mental health of families and children. The image of the lighting bulb symbolizes the idea of seeking new knowledge and understanding, which are essential for providing the best care possible as a PMHNP (Fulton et al., 2019). And the picture of safety represents the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for patients to heal and thrive.
