US public school students tend to
attend schools where most
students
have the
same racial or ethnic background.
While this trend has changed somewhat over the
past two decades,
it’s especially true for
white students,
according
to
analysis
from
the
US
Department
of
Education’s Pew Research
Center.
In the 2018-19 school year, the most recent year for which data
are available, 79% of
her
white
public
primary and secondary school students
were
enrolled
in schools where at least half of
her peers were
white.
That year, more than half
(56%) of Hispanic students and 42% of
black students attended schools where
more
than half
of the students shared
a race or ethnicity. This includes those who attend traditional public schools and
charter public schools.
