Question 1: Two trials are taking place simultaneously following Rodney King’s beating. One is heard by the California courts, while the other is heard by the federal courts. Three federally charged police officers were cleared by jurors who were all white. A national outcry against police brutality followed this.
In 1991, Rodney King was allegedly beaten to death by four police officers. After a second trial, all four officers were found not guilty. The acquittals sparked riots that cost $1 billion and killed 55 people.
In the Rodney King trial, six white people, two African-Americans, and two Hispanics were selected as jurors. The majority of the white females were in their twenties or thirties and had never been in trouble with the law or been involved in drugs. The black men had completed college and had never been convicted of a felony or used drugs.
Question 1c: In response to this decision, more than 1,000 people rioted in South Central Los Angeles. Thousands were harmed and 53 people were killed. The Rodney King verdict was interpreted as an illustration of “whites” shielding “whites” at the expense of ensuring that an African-American suspect received justice. The police officers were cleared of charges of assault and excessive force. The judge ruled that there were far too many inconsistencies in the witness testimony to support a finding of guilt, so they were all found not guilty. This event was recorded by video cameras on top of buildings and by helicopters flying overhead, which caused widespread outrage.
Question 2: The Rodney King case is currently being heard in California’s federal district court. The Los Angeles Police Department pursued Rodney Glen King in 1992 during a high-speed chase. King was repeatedly kicked and beaten while lying on the ground after being taken into custody by a group of police officers.
Question 2a The Rodney King Verdicts is a documentary about the infamous Los Angeles police beating of African-American driver Rodney King. Two officers were cleared of all charges in state court. Two police officers were found guilty by a jury in federal court of violating King’s civil rights.
Question 2b: The Rodney King case was decided by two juries. All four police officers were found guilty by a jury of violating Martin Luther King Jr.’s civil rights.
Question 2c: Rodney King’s beating in 1992 put the American justice system to the test. In the Rodney King Verdicts case, two separate trials were held to reach a verdict. Two former LAPD officers, Laurence Powell and Theodore Briseno, were found not guilty in both cases.
The federal and state courts are the focus of Question 3: The Rodney King Verdicts. In 1992, a group of police officers beat Rodney King, an African-American man. These occurrences resulted in property damage worth one billion dollars. California’s lawsuit and federal investigation were sparked by this incident.

When I finished my paralegal certificate program I quickly applied at multiple law firms. I was very eager to finally start working in the legal field. I received a call from one of the offices I applied to and I was scheduled for an interview. I gladly went and felt great during my interview. I soon after received a call from the supervisor that I had been accepted for the job. I was very excited, it was a small office but I was excited to start my career in the legal field. I was working at the company for a week when I received a call from a big law firm that I had previously applied wanting to interview me. I accepted the interview wanting to get more interview experience and also to see what else was out there. I was offered the position during the interview. I remember feeling shocked. I was not expecting a job offer so fast. I kindly asked the interviewer for some time and she provided me with a day to think about the offer. I quickly went home to discuss with my husband. I felt excited but at the same time horrible that I had just started at another job and did not want to be on bad terms with them. Honestly the offer was too good to pass up, it was better benefits, a better role, better pay, and the office I was going to work from was also closer to home. The law office was a well-known law office with different departments that I could learn from. The decision was already made but I just had to figure out how to explain to my current job the offer that I was given without damaging the relationship I had with them as a new employee. I think that situation made me feel debilitative emotions. I knew what I wanted to do and I knew that I needed to take the extra step if I wanted to gain more experience career wise but I felt horrible thinking that I was going to tell someone that gave me my first chance at a career as a paralegal that I could no longer work with them. I honestly even thought about turning down the second offer at some point just because I felt so bad with my current employer. I had mixed emotions and, in my mind,, I knew they were going to see me as an unreliable person and that is not me at all.
