Overview:
Assume that you are a helping professional and you are meeting your new client for the
first time. In the referral, the client identified a major problem in living that they are
experiencing. In preparation for this meeting, you must conduct some basic research
about the problem to understand the client’s current situation. Once you have some
information on the problem, you will be looking for services in your local area that you
can suggest to support the client in resolving their problem in living.
Instructions:
The following are the sections of your paper:
• Introduction:
o What is the problem you are discussing, including the problem’s
background information?
o Who is affected by the selected problem?
o What are the underlying causes of the problem?
o What are the potential impacts of this problem? (Is there a domino
effect? Does this problem prevent the client from meeting their basic
needs? Does this problem impact other aspects of their lives?)
o What types of services or supports are needed to resolve/
address the
problem?
• Two local service suggestions to help clients:
o Share the information for a specific program or service in your area that
you can suggest to the client. Be sure to include the program name.
o What is the service offered? How does it work? (i.e., is it a home visiting
program, do they offer long-term in-office counseling, do they have an on-
sight shelter?)
• Identify the barriers a client may face in accessing the services identified.
• Conclusion:
o Restate your thesis and tie all of your findings together.

Substance Abuse
Substance abuse is the excessive use of drugs in a way r that damages the user and those around them. It is a
serious health issue that may impact one’s physical, emotional, and social well-being. The most often misused
substance is alcohol, followed by cocaine, marijuana, and opioids. Adult alcohol addiction in the USA is a serious
issue. Over 14 million individuals in the USA are thought to misuse alcohol in some way. Individuals, families, and
communities are all directly impacted by the effects of alcohol misuse on their health and wellness. Alcohol abuse
is associated with many physical, mental, and social problems (Alozai & Sharma, 2022). It increases the risk of
numerous health problems, including liver cirrhosis, certain cancers, stroke, hypertension, depression, and
dementia. It also increases the risk of accidents, violence, and suicide. Excessive drinking can also lead to financial
and legal problems, social isolation, and strained relationships with family and friends.
Regular drinking of more than the maximum average of two servings for men and one for women is the
main risk factor for alcohol addiction. Other risk factors comprise having easy access to alcohol, having poor self-
esteem, being depressed or having other mental health problems, and a family history of AUD. Alcohol misuse
may also affect the economy. Alcohol misuse costs the US economy $249 billion annually; this covers medical
expenses, missed productivity, and expenses resulting from crime and auto accidents (Alozai & Sharma, 2022).
Employment of various measures can decrease adult alcohol abuse in the USA. These include raising alcohol taxes
and pricing, enacting measures to limit access to alcohol, and controlling the promotion and marketing of alcoholic
drinks. Furthermore, it’s critical to support and make therapy for those with alcohol use problems accessible.
