A research topic can come from many different sources. For some social workers, it starts with a nagging question or obsession that just won’t leave them. For others, it is a noticeable gap in the social work knowledge base, which they discover through immersing themselves in the literature. For still others, it is a practice problem they have encountered that doesn’t seem to have a clear answer. What issues do you see in the social work field—on the job, or through articles you have read? What is one problem you would like to address as a social worker? That problem could be related to gaps in services, diverse populations in need, or an ongoing human challenge such as addiction or trauma.
In this Assignment, you begin thinking about your own “nagging question” while also gaining experience searching in the Walden Library databases. Additionally, you have the opportunity to practice APA Style by referencing the research articles you find in the Library

This journal Discusses the disparities in birth outcomes for black women in the United States.
Black women are two to three times more likely to experience infant mortality and have infants
born preterm or at low birthweight compared with white women. How chronic stressors can give
rise to preterm babies.

traumatic event and subsequently developing posttraumatic stress reactions, because of negative
interactions and communications with medical professionals.

increases. The journal found that black immigrant women’s low birth weight risk was 15%
higher for those living in highly segregated areas than other women.

Research Topic and Articles
For my research project, my potential research topic has to do with how parental
use of electronic devices in child caring might influence the strength and quality of the
parent-child bond.
During the literature search process, I used the search terms “relationship-
building,” “early childhood,” “electronic devices,” “”child-parent bond,” “strength of child-
parent bond,” and “technology.”
The first article I found will be used to explore the importance of relationship
building between caregiver and child to outcomes later in life (Vu et al., 2015). Vu et al.
(2015) identifies six evidence-based caregiver-child interaction interventions that foster
positive relationships between caregiver and child. These positive relationships have
been found to lead to positive outcomes later in life.
Coyne et al. (2021) explore the relationship between emotion regulation in
toddlers and caregivers allowing technology use. The research identifies a correlation
between parents utilizing technology to placate tantrums and the development of
problematic media use (Coyne et al., 2021).
Schriever (2021) discusses the response early childhood educators have to
concerns of parents about technology use. The article describes the differences
between technology use in the home versus an educational setting, including access to
technology and its expected use (Schriever, 2021).
