Homeland Security
In need of two peer responses.
You must respond to two other threads with a response of at least 150 words. The response will not simply be an agreement to the original author’s thread but will be a continuation of the topic with additional input.
Task 2: After you have created your new discussion topic, you are required to read and respond to a minimum of 2 of your classmates’ discussion topics. Think of your responses in terms of a contribution to a dialogue, not a writing exercise or a chat room. Elaborate a single idea and keep your post short but concise as if you were holding a conversation with your classmate(s). Incorporate what you have learned from the weekly reading material and from your own real-world experiences. Don’t forget to use proper APA citations and references whenever necessary.
Peer 1:
I do think the demand for emergency management professionals is on the rise. As you stated, there rise can be attributed to the climate change and the threat of terrorism. It its interesting that you mention continuing to ad employment by getting certain accreditations and certificate are very much a must in staying competitive. I think there will also be a larger need for emergency management officials that speak other languages as well. Some public speaking or media skills will definitely be needed. As the emergency management field continues to expand, I can see how IT will become a major asset to employers seeking careers in emergency management. I also agree with your statement on assessing the mental health of all parties involved. This field may come with a lot of pressure and unpredictable hours. The physical and mental fitness will definitely come into play while emergency management personel combat incidents and disasters.
Peer 2:
The employment outlook for emergency management positions are steadily climbing its way into high demand. Although the jobs labeled as “emergency management directors” are lower than other employment opportunities in the field there are many employment opportunities in the emergency management field. When looking at public job opportunity there aren’t as many openings at the director level. Personally, I think that there probably isn’t a high attrition rate in the emergency management director field. This is because most holding this title in a government agency or public capacity will be in position until they reach retirement age or get promoted to another position. However, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are around 900 vacancies that occur at the emergency management director level annually. This is a good rate. This may seem high because most guys retire, as i stated earlier. Also these jobs may not be vacant very long. Its is always good practice to monitor these openings on job sites like USA Jobs or Indeed. Another reason there aren’t countless opportunities in the private sector, is because most small towns use an already appointed or elected official to assume the role as the emergency management director. I can remember when my father was the Fire Chief, he would double as the emergency management director when there was no room in the budget to hire one for that specific position. There are countless job opportunities in the private sector. These emergency management positions may fall under another job title. Emergency management professionals are in high demand at big corporations. There always in need of someone to manage and create things like an evacuation plan or to have a plan to lock down the facility. This person often doubles as the PAO as they would be the subject matter expert briefing the brass and/or the media outlets.
Most emergency management career opportunities require at least a Bachelor’s degree in emergency management. Its always good to get some sort of technological training as most systems are automated and situated in an IT environment. In the emergency management field experience is always a plus. It is difficult to simulate an actual emergency. Experience is held in such high regard because the emergency management person will definitely be making some high pressure decisions and have the knowledge needed to know what is needed in various emergency situations. As always the pay will vary, but is is definitely competitive with the median pay being close to $80,000 and some directors making well over six figures.
